The same operation is quoted anywhere between £90 and £400. The difference is usually what is included.
Ring five practices for a neutering quote and you will get five numbers with a fourfold spread. It is a reasonable thing to be suspicious about, and the explanation is mostly in what the number covers.
What Should Be Included
Pre-anaesthetic examination, intravenous fluids during the procedure, individual anaesthetic monitoring by a nurse, pain relief to take home, and a post-operative check. A quote that excludes several of these will always look cheaper and is not the same operation.
Pre-Anaesthetic Blood Testing
Some practices include it, some offer it, some do not mention it. For a young healthy animal the evidence for routine testing is genuinely debatable. For anything older or with a history, it is not. We offer rather than require it, and explain why.
Size Changes Everything for Dogs
Drug doses scale with weight and a large dog needs considerably more of everything, plus longer surgical and recovery time. A quote that is the same for a whippet and a great dane has been rounded in someone’s favour.
Laparoscopic Versus Open
Keyhole spays cost more and offer a smaller wound and quicker recovery. They are a genuine option rather than a necessity. We do not offer them and will refer you to a practice that does if you want one, rather than talking you out of it.
The Question to Ask
Not “how much” but “what does that include, and what would I be charged extra for”. Any practice worth using will answer that without hesitating.
